Bad hair days

So I’ve been given the task of putting hair on all the characters using a Maya plugin - Joe Alter’s “Shave and a Haircut”. It’s a fantastic tool but I’ve had a total nightmare with it - found out a couple of weeks back that we are going HD, which has pretty much meant redoing everything AGAIN. It wouldn’t be so bad if they didn’t want the frames to take any longer than 3 minutes! It’s tried my patience to the limit but I’m nearly there having finished 2 characters and I’m nearly done on the last one.

Will post some stills when I’m allowed….

Update!

Its been a while so it’s definitely time for an update. Back in December I finished compositing at blue-zoo on their CBBC series “Get Squiggling” - it’s available on iPlayer (at the time of writing) if you want to check it out. Since then it’s been a busy and good few months - went off to Canada for a month’s skiing to a place called Fernie - legendary powder record and so it proved. My sister was out there doing a season, and I went with my mate Tim.

Fernie

Towards the end we did a road trip to Seattle for the weekend with some friends we met in our hostel (Rasmus “The Ham” Arendt Nielson from Denmark and Erik and Calle from Sweden) - took 20hrs to get there after a 300 mile detour! In the end we spent less time there than in the car but had a sweet time, apart from the journey back when I was suffering one of my all time top 5 hangovers!

Fernie-Seattle

My freelance days are over for the time being as I’m back at blue-zoo only on a year long contract. I started, jet lagged, the day after I returned from Fernie and it’s been good so far. It’s another CBBC show but far more high end than “Get Squiggling”. I took advantage of having paid holiday for the first time by going on another week long ski trip - this time to Saalbach, Austria, 4 of us blagging our way onto a cheap student ski trip. Excellent apres ski as you’d expect being in Austria and on a national student ski trip!

Freebies!

Got my first taste of a freebie at blue-zoo a week or so ago. Four of us went to Disney HQ in London for an advanced screening of the Enchanted - the one where a cartoon disney character finds herself in real life New York. Expecting the worst, we got stuck in to the free grub (including chocolate dipped strawberries) and booze, and then went into the screening - to our surprise it was actually really quite good. Thinking it must have been the drink, I watched the Film 2007 review and Jonathan Ross loved it too.

New page added!

Check out the “Work” page to see a few video examples of some of the projects I was involved with at Bird Studios. Apologies about the quality of some of them.

Steep and deep!

Freelance life has its perks - I’m out of contract and so I’ve decided to do what I love best and go skiing for a month with my friend Tim. We’re off to Fernie, Canada in January - my sister is based there for the season and it’s a resort known for it’s off-piste powder (which I can’t do very well…. yet). I can’t wait!

Just finished at Blue-zoo

I have recently finished a 5 month contract at Blue-zoo and have really enjoyed my time there. Initially I was contracted to work on BBC’s Basil Brush programme, but on completion of that my contract was extended to work on another project; BBC’s Get Squiggling - a Teletubby style show with 2d/3d environments and characters in a crayon drawn style. Should be out in the New Year.

8 weeks at Blue-zoo!

I’ve started an 8 week contract working at Blue-zoo on their Basil Brush animated series. I’m mainly doing rendering and comping, but have to do a few effects when the shot requires it. I’m having a good time, with fun people and I’m learning quite a lot of new skills in After Effects. Here’s hoping more work comes of it!

3 days at Blue-zoo!

2 weeks into freelancing, I landed my first bit of work! Got 3 days working for Blue-zoo on one of their many Nickelodeon projects. Not sure if I am allowed to divulge more info or not, but I’ll post when I know more….

Showreel Online!

Have a look at my latest showreel. It includes my work from Bird Studios over the last 2 years. I’m going to try to keep it updated so watch this space…
